Battling their second straight ranked opponent, Elon had to use two overtimes to beat conference rival and then-No. 22 Richmond, 30-27. The Phoenix pushed the game into overtime thanks to a 42-yard field goal with 37 seconds left in the game. After both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime, the Elon defense held Richmond to a field goal then Jalen Hampton ran 11 yards to paydirt to give the Phoenix the victory. With the win, Elon moves up to No. 18 in this week’s AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
The Top 10 remained relatively unchanged with North Dakota State still holding at No. 1. Sacramento State and Montana State flip-flopped positions despite both teams winning, but then-No. 9 Missouri State lost to North Dakota, 48-31, causing the Bears to fall to No. 19. That made room for Holy Cross to join the Top 10. The Crusaders are 5-0 after beating Harvard, 30-21.
There are three Top 25 matchups this coming Saturday with the first one being No. 6 Delaware traveling to No. 17 William & Mary. The Blue Hens will try to keep their top spot in the Colonial Athletic Association standings. The second is a Big Sky affair as No. 7 Weber State plays host to No. 21 Eastern Washington. The final matchup has No. 19 Missouri State hosting newly ranked and No. 24 Southern Illinois.
