[D3 Poll] North Central Starts 2021 Playoffs at No. 1

North Central (Ill.) put an exclamation point on the 2021 regular season, beating North Park (Ill.) 84-6, to finish at No. 1 in the AFCA Division III Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. In the rout, the Cardinals set a new College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin single-game record with 726 total yards of offense and a single-game school record with 591 rushing yards. North Central will begin defense of their 2019 national title against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.).

No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor (Tex.) has arguably the toughest bracket in the NCAA Division III playoffs with seven of the eight teams in their region ranked in the AFCA Top 25. The Cru will host No. 14-ranked and Southern Athletic Association champion Trinity (Tex.). The top seed in that region is No. 5 St. John’s (Minn.). The Johnnies drew newly ranked Lake Forest (Ill.) in the first round. The Foresters earned their first ranking since November 19, 2002 and come in at No. 22 after beating Chicago (Ill.), 28-6, to claim the Midwest Conference crown. No. 3 Wisconsin-Whitewater and No. 4 Mount Union (Ohio) earned the two remaining No. 1 seeds.
