[NAIA Poll] Morningside Ends Regular Season At No. 1

Morningside (Iowa) started the 2019 season at No. 1, and they are still No. 1 at the end of the regular season. The Mustangs scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter of their Top 5 matchup against Northwestern (Iowa), overcoming a 13-10 deficit at halftime to win 37-27 and clinch their ninth straight Great Plains Athletic Conference title. Morningside will host No. 17 Dickinson State (N.D.) in the first round of the NAIA Football Championship Series while Northwestern, who dropped to No. 8, will host No. 9 Saint Xavier (Ill.).

No. 2 Marian (Ind.), No. 3 Kansas Wesleyan and No. 4 Grand View (Iowa) all held their spots from last week, but with Northwestern’s loss, the College of Idaho jumps into the Top 5. The Coyotes, who won the Frontier Conference and are 10-0, will face No. 16 Ottawa (Ariz.) in the first round of the playoffs.
Sixteen of the Top 17 teams in the poll earned a spot in the playoffs. The only exception is No. 14 Southeastern (Fla.). The Fire ended their season with an 8-1 record a second-place finish in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division.

Montana Tech and Dordt (Iowa) fell out of the final regular season poll, allowing Montana-Western and Waldorf (Iowa) to re-enter. No. 22 Montana-Western ended their season with a 69-29 blowout win over Southern Oregon while No. 23 Waldorf was idle during the final week.
