The AFCA is proud to announce Werner, the world leader in ladders, as the title sponsor of the Werner Ladder AFCA FBS National and Regional Coach of the Year awards.
“We have chosen to support AFCA and recognize these incredible coaches because they have such a profound impact on their players and communities,” said Stacy Gardella, vice president of brand marketing for WernerCo. “These coaches ‘step up’ every day and drive success on and off the field, which is why partnering with AFCA is a great fit for Werner Ladder.”
The AFCA has been honoring its members for outstanding coaching performance since 1935, when Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf of Northwestern University was named the first AFCA Coach of the Year. There have been 78 different coaches honored from 51 universities with the AFCA FBS Coach of the Year Award. Washington State’s Mike Leach was the 2018 honoree.

The AFCA began selecting Regional Coaches of the Year in 1960. From 1960 to 1971, eight winners were selected. In 1972, a ninth honoree was added. In 1983, the AFCA began honoring coaches in four divisions and reduced the number of regional honorees in each division to five. The five FBS Regional Coaches of the Year honored in 2018 were: Dino Babers, Syracuse (Region 1); Nick Saban, Alabama (Region 2); Brian Kelly, Notre Dame (Region 3); Matt Campbell, Iowa State (Region 4); and Mike Leach, Washington State (Region 5).
AFCA Regional and National Coach of the Year awards are voted on by active members of the association in their respective regions and divisions. Regional Coach of the Year voting begins in mid-November and ends in early December. When the Regional Coaches of the Year are announced, those winners become finalist for National Coach of the Year. That voting begins in mid-December and ends on the Monday during each year’s AFCA Convention.
The 2019 Werner Ladder AFCA FBS Regional Coaches of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, December 10, while the FBS National Coach of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, January 14, 2020.
“There is no greater honor than being voted Coach of the Year by your peers. We are excited about Werner becoming the title sponsor of the AFCA FBS National and Regional Coach of the Year awards,” said Todd Berry, AFCA executive director. “Werner is a global company that supports collegiate athletics in a variety of ways. We look forward to partnering with them to bring more recognition to the AFCA’s oldest award, and one of the most important honors we have.”
